New Beginnings and Everything Before That

Black guy yells at cloud!

Most Sundays, I struggle to remember what I actually got done over the past week. Going forward, I will write things down to put an end to the tradition of constantly racking my brain and feeling guilty when the memories do not come. I also think the light pressure of having to update this website at least once a week (don’t quote me on that) will motivate me to be more intentional with the work I get done. I’m not sure what updates will look like consistently, but hopefully in the future I can expand past traditional info dumps about the stuff that I am working on.

This semester was the most drawn-out one that I’ve had so far. Now that all my finals have been submitted, I’ve had some time to reflect on everything that's happened. I think things were just especially rough academically, which kinda created a somber mood for everything else, since my coursework takes up the most time here.

Classes notwithstanding, this semester has been pretty fun. It’s been nice trying new things and meeting new people. Here are some of the things that I got done this fall:

I looked at an abandoned asylum.

My friend wanted to explore this abandoned asylum, and while it looked really cool, we didn’t actually go inside since it was fenced off. Trespassing is illegal and something I’d never condone, or ever do! Instead we went home and used AI tools to create *incredibly* realistic renderings of what it *would* have looked like if we were lesser people capable of unsavory activities.

I had a court appearance for running a red light on a Citibike.

This was particularly annoying because the criminal summons required me to show up in person. In the end, I took an “ACD”. It's funny because the adjournment period was shortened significantly, no thanks to the shitty public defender I was assigned. Ironically, the bailiff was the one with the bright idea of shortening the time to just a couple of days.

I helped make a reeeeeeaaaallllllyyyyyy long dress.

I was approached to help combine a bunch of Skims dresses for a friend’s fashion project. He explained the concept in great detail at some point…something about elevating fast fashion. I thought it was kinda interesting but none of it matters, though, because the project was never actually published. At least there are photos. Oh well...

I drove a ton.

I have been putting a lot of miles on my old ass car. While nothing too concerning has happened recently, I am worried about my front right strut going. Maybe I’m making something out of nothing, though, since they say that old Volvos will be there along with the cockroaches and Twinkies after the A-bomb drops. Only time and more breakdowns will tell…

I chose to see some cool art.

I had the chance to visit Dia:Beacon for the first time. This was really cool since I have spent quite a while learning about some of the pieces they have there. It’s so different, actually seeing something in person. It was mind-blowing to see the objects from Tehching Hsieh’s works in real life. I also saw this weird mechanism. I forgot who made it, though :/

I was required to see some cool art.

For my Regenerative Design II course, our class took a field trip to the Albers Foundation in Bethany, CT. We took a look at their archives and learned about Josef and Anni Albers. Afterwards, we had a chance to look at a design studio in an adjacent building. There was a lecture on the usefulness of paper folding, and we got a chance to look at some archival furniture.

I got into the holiday spirit.

Shutout to Zoë for being one of the most positive forces in my life recently (she can just barely be seen above building a gingerbread house). She allowed me to help her out with a food drive she started on campus for the Amazing Grace Food Pantry run by St. Vincent de Paul. She didn’t want to keep track of anything (ughh what a saint), but I know for a fact we collected at least 300 lbs of goods.

I built a chair.

Imagine my surprise when my Product Design II course had a single main assignment: making a chair. The chair had to be made of renewable materials and serve a special purpose. Mine was a modular system for kids to create simple structures (blanket forts). This took up most of my time this semester, and the process is documented here if you would like to learn more.

I made really good friends.

Friends were really important to me because things sucked so much this fall. Thank you to Jaejun/Billy/Luke/Freya (dude, you gotta pick one), Christina, Hazel, and everyone else who took the time to check in on me this year.

I’m looking forward to the Spring semester. I will have much more freedom to choose my courses, and I’m already lined up to TA Drawing II. I’ll also have way more time to focus on the personal projects I have lined up. I’ve learned a lot about myself this Fall. Sometimes it felt like I was learning too much, even. Regardless, I’m excited that this semester is over and I get back to prioritizing the things I'm truly passionate about. I can’t wait to share some of those things with you all here.

That is all for now. If you’ve read to the end, thank you.
